Mikel Arteta’s squad will of course be back in action shortly.

The Gunners have travelled to Anfield for a Carabao Cup tie with Liverpool after seeing Chelsea beat fierce rivals Tottenham in the other semi-final of Wednesday’s game.

With the clash rescheduled due to the Covid-19 “outbreak” in Jurgen Klopp’s side last week, Arsenal will enter proceedings with an eye on how the rebound will perform, with the same result .

This comes after Arteta’s under-staffed unit was knocked out of two high-profile cup competitions in English football – the FA Cup – after a humiliating 1-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Odegaard latest

In turn, the news of midfield metronome Granit Xhaka returning to matchday on Thursday night was undoubtedly widely recognised by Arsenal fans.

While one option in the middle of the park marked his comeback, another missed:

Midfielder Odegaard has certainly been in good form lately, enjoying his most productive period since the Norwegian joined permanently from Real Madrid in the summer.

However, it was a blow to all those linked to Arsenal, with Odegaard later confirmed to have tested positive for Covid-19.

As a result, the 23-year-old not only missed tonight, but likely missed out on Sunday’s North London derby between the Gunners and Tottenham in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Sead Kolasinac’s gameday absence has been attributed to a tight hamstring:
