Many things in the hockey game have changed, but five of the outstanding parts are either about to disappear or will never be seen in the game.
Tobacco money was once an important part of all sports. Players used to smoke in the locker room and at halftime, so it is commonplace to recognize such products. Oops, Cal Gardner, star of the New York Rangers, took a prominent place in a camel advertisement in the 1940s.
As cigarette advertisements become less visible in the mainstream media, and the world’s population understands more and more about the dangers of smoking, we can safely say that this kind of thing will never happen again.
Roster for Canada only
Hockey games continue to develop around the world, and more and more countries appear on the big stage every season. On average, each team has 7.4 players from outside North America. The sport may still be the most popular in Canada, but the composition of each team’s roster is constantly evolving.
The Columbus Blue Jackets are the most diverse team in the country, with players from 10 different countries on this year’s roster.
The highest grade wooden stick
With the development of hockey, the equipment has changed over the years, from helmets to mats, roller skates, and of course sticks. For most of the sport’s existence, wooden sticks were used almost exclusively. But by the late 1980s, aluminum rods quickly entered the sport. With the introduction of the first composite blade and then the introduction of composite sticks, the sticks will change further, which became commonplace in the 2000s.
In the past ten years, we have seen some persistence, the most famous being Ryan Smyth, but as the game gets faster, this is almost a thing of the past. Nevertheless, composite sticks are not as durable as wooden sticks, and their costs continue to rise.
Now look at the NHL crowd. Everyone looks casual, wearing jerseys and hats to celebrate their favorite team. This is an interesting place.
But look at the photos from the 1950s. This is a completely different experience, and fans mostly wear the formal attire you would expect in church or business meetings. Suits and long skirts can be seen everywhere. Now, you would seem silly to appear in such a game.
Skating rink size below current NHL standards
The current NHL ice rink size standard is 200×85 feet, which is mainly used in all major leagues in North America. But this is not always the case.
On the day back to Boston Garden—there was no uniform rink size standard at the time—the building used 191×83 foot sheets, and the Buffalo Sabres also played on a short skating rink in the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium. “The Aud” is 196×85 feet, while the Chicago Blackhawks are 188×85 feet on the ice rink at Chicago Stadium.
Now everything is the same. There is no reason to change this.
