On Thursday, the Indian women’s football team defeated the top ranked Chinese Taipei team 1-0 in a friendly match in Bahrain, winning a morale-boosting victory.
Renu scored the most important goal in the third minute of the game, propelling her team to victory over the 40th-ranked Chinese Taipei. Five minutes later, Renu had a chance to score her second goal, but she was ruled offside before connecting with Dalima Chipper’s cross.
Chinese Taipei midfielder Ding Chi nearly equalized, but was blocked by Aditi Johan in the 17th minute. Aditi also prevented Su Yu-Hsuan from trying to ensure that India stayed ahead at halftime.
Indumathi found the net after 9 minutes of the second half, but was sentenced to offside. Lee Hsiu-Chin tried her luck at close range before the hour mark, but Aditi stood tall and rejected her.
Chen Yanping made the final effort for the Chinese Taipei team in the last minute of regular time, but her effort safely landed on Aditi’s gloves.
In the past two weeks, Indian women have participated in four tournaments and played two friendly matches in the UAE and Bahrain. The team coached by the 57th ranked Thomas Dennerby defeated host Bahrain 5-0 on Sunday. Earlier this month, the Indian team also defeated the UAE 4-1 and lost 1-0 to Tunisia, ranked 77th.
These friendly matches are part of the Indian team’s preparation for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup to be held from January to February next year.
The Indian team will now head to Sweden, where they will face the Swedish Women’s Super League teams Hammarby and Yurgardens IF.
