The Detroit Red Wings acquired Mitchell Stephens from the Tampa Bay Chargers

The Detroit Red Wings today acquired center Mitchell Stephens from the Tampa Bay Chargers in exchange for Detroit’s 6th round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Stephens is a forward from Petersburg, Ontario. After scoring 22 goals in the second season of junior hockey with Saginaw of the Ontario Hockey League, in the second round of the 2015 NHL Draft (33rd) Selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Signed with the Chargers on April 4, 2016, played 5 games with the Syracuse team of the American Hockey League, scoring 1 goal.

After spending his last junior hockey season between OHL’s Saginaw and London, Stephens returned to Syracuse, scoring 19 goals in 70 games in the 2017-18 season and in the 2018-19 season. Scored 11 goals in 32 games.

Stephens started the 2019-20 season in Syracuse, but was selected to the NHL for the first time two months after the start of the season, and made his debut against the New York Islanders on December 9, 2019. 19 days later, he scored his first NHL goal against the Montreal Canadiens and ended his first NHL season with 3 goals and 6 points in 38 games. During the Chargers’ campaign in the Stanley Cup, Stephens did not score in seven games of the playoffs.
