Senegal’s Koulibaly tests positive for COVID-19 ahead of Nations Cup opener

Napoli centre-back Kalidou Coulibaly tested positive for COVID-19 while playing with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, the Serie A club said on Saturday.

Senegal started its campaign against Zimbabwe in Group B on Monday.

“Kalidou Coulibaly tested positive for COVID-19 during his international assignment in Senegal. The defender, who was vaccinated and asymptomatic, is now in self-isolation as per protocol,” Napoli said in a statement.

Senegal was due to leave Dakar on Wednesday but the trip was made after positive cases of midfielders Pape Matar Sar and Nanpalis Mendy and striker Mame Baba Thiam was postponed to retest the team. Six other staff members also tested positive, Victor Cisse, secretary general of the Senegalese Football Federation, later said.

Gabon captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and teammate Mario Lemina tested positive on arrival at Yaoundé airport on Thursday, casting doubt on their participation .
