Brazilian forward Neymar complained on Thursday that he did not receive the respect he deserved after Brazil defeated Peru 2-0 to win the 2022 World Cup qualifier for the eighth consecutive time.
Neymar had a goal and an assist, but was criticized by fans and commentators for being involved in a melee and failed to reproduce the shining status that made him one of the top players of his generation.
“I don’t know what else I need to do in this jersey to make the fans respect Neymar,” he said after the victory in Recife.
He was also criticized after Brazil defeated Chile 1-0 last week, and some fans said he looked overweight. Neymar lifted his shirt to show his abdomen in the courtside interview and expressed his anger.
Brazil scored twice in the first half and beat Peru 2-0
“This is not normal,” he said. “This has been happening for a long time, from your reporters, commentators and others. Sometimes I don’t even want to be interviewed, but I will do my part at important moments.”
Since his sudden appearance as a young prodigy by Santos more than ten years ago, Neymar has had a love-hate relationship with the media and fans.
Many people like his undeniable talent, but some people say they are delayed by a lifestyle they consider to be overly ostentatious.
Neymar’s goal on Thursday was his 69th goal in the national team and his 12th goal in the World Cup qualifiers, which is a Brazilian record.
Brazil tops the South American qualifying group for the World Cup in Qatar next year, almost guaranteed a place in the finals.
