Mahela Jayawardene is expected to play a bigger role in Sri Lanka’s cricket match

After the departure of head coach Mickey Arthur, former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene is likely to be taken to the Sri Lankan team’s coaching staff.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has approved the cricket committee’s decision to let Jayawardna take a certain coaching position within the team. After two test matches between Sri Lanka and the West Indies, Arthur’s tenure will end in two weeks.

Although Jayawardna will not join directly as the head coach, but is expected to join as a consultant coach, he will have a great say in the development of the country’s cricket. Together with Jayawardna, Las maringa, Rangana Herath and Nuwan Kulasekara are also expected to join.

Mahela Jayawardene will be allowed to continue to coach the Mumbai Indians and Southern Warriors

SLC hopes that the two-year contract signed by Mahela Jayawardene will not conflict with the former right-hander’s role as the head coach of the IPL team Mumbai Indians and Centurion Southern Warriors.

If Mahela agrees to join, we will be very happy. You can see the difference when he played in the UAE, the feedback we got from the players and the coaching staff is very good,” an SLC official said to The Island.

According to reports, Jayawardene refused to conduct overseas tours, but may work with the Colombo team. The 44-year-old player also made it clear that he will only make a commitment to the team if the appropriate structure and plans are in place. He also assumes that he has already said that the domestic structure needs to be improved first, rather than spending time with senior teams.
