Lucas Digne confirms Aston Villa move, slams Rafa Benitez as Everton bid farewell

Lucas Digne ready to move to Aston Villa

Everton defender Lucas Digne has all but confirmed his move to Aston Villa in a message posted to Instagram tonight that included a swipe at former manager Rafa Benitez.

The left-back, who underwent a medical ahead of his move on Wednesday, is set to join Villa in a €27m (£25m) deal.

Whether he will make his debut against Manchester United this weekend remains to be seen.

Digne hits Rafa Benitez

Now, Digne has posted a message on social media in which he thanked Everton’s loyal fans for their support and for being able to play for the club.

However, he couldn’t help slamming the man who had shunned him for two months, Everton boss Rafa Benitez.

The statement on Instagram reads:

Just a year ago, I signed a new contract with the ambition of staying at this club for the long term, giving everything for my club, for the development and projects, what I believe in – and for the passionate fans.
My dream is to help the club get back to where it belongs. Wearing the captain’s armband in some games always makes me proud.

Everything must end.
I just didn’t expect it to end this way.

I am very saddened by what happened last month and some words about me.
But I’m not going to engage in a war of words with anyone.

The club shouldn’t be like that, the fans shouldn’t be like that – I honestly don’t think I should be like that.
There are so many good and decent people inside and outside Everton who want the best for this club, not just for themselves – I can only say to them from the bottom of my heart: all the best to you!

Thank you, to all of you good, proud and passionate true Evertonians. It’s an honour and a real joy to play for you, the fans, the people – because the club doesn’t belong to the players or the coach, it belongs to the fans. Wherever I go, I will keep you in my heart.
Sometimes, all it takes is an outsider to ruin a beautiful relationship.
all the best @Everton and Evertonians 💙

Judging by the last paragraph, it’s safe to say that the two continue to have no agreement, to put it mildly.
