The transparency provided by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp over the club’s recent Covid-19 “outbreak” could end up with his side being severely punished by the Football League.

‘Fake’ outbreak

The theme of Covid-19 certainly featured prominently in the headlines at Anfield throughout last week.

This comes after Liverpool’s scheduled Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg meeting with Premier League rivals Arsenal was postponed due to an alleged outbreak at the club’s camp.

So Jurgen Klopp has been surprised by his team’s recent fitness in an interview with the media ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup tie with Shrewsbury.

The German went on to reveal that, in fact, only one Reds player, Trent Alexander-Arnold, has been identified as a true positive case.

All other Covid cases initially reported by the club turned out to be “false positives”:

Punishment card?

However, as mentioned above, Klopp’s transparency in providing insight into the situation on Merseyside could prove his team’s hopes of Carabao Cup glory are entirely costly.

This comes as reliable outlet The Athletic has confirmed that Liverpool are facing a real threat of an investigation into the club’s Covid situation.

A number of EFL clubs are understood to have lodged complaints seeking clarification of Klopp’s false positives, after seeing their own pleas for rescheduling be struck down:

“Confused clubs want to find out when Liverpool discovered the information, as it was before the Arsenal game, which could go as planned.”

It’s worth noting that Liverpool could be “severely punished” if they are sentenced to unreasonably delay their meeting with Arsenal.

Although not implied in The Athletic’s report, Klopp et al cannot be ruled out. Will be forced to forfeit their Carabao Cup tie (or at least the first leg) if found to have deliberately cheated the EFL.
