Indian women’s cricket team quarantines in Mumbai ahead of World Cup departure

India’s women’s cricket team for the World Cup will assemble in Mumbai on Sunday for a week-long quarantine before heading to New Zealand.

The players have recently gathered in Dehradun to build team bonds, and the youngsters in the squad have also been tasked with developing leadership skills.

Fifteen squad members and three reserve members have now been asked to report to Mumbai, where they will be quarantined for a week. The team is expected to depart for New Zealand on January 24 and players will have to undergo another quarantine upon arrival.

Starting February 11, India will play a five-match series and a T20I match with hosts New Zealand ahead of the ODI World Cup in March-April.

Team management wanted a week-long training camp before departure, but couldn’t schedule it due to rising COVID-19 cases across the country.

India reached the finals of the 2017 edition, giving a huge boost to women’s cricket in the country. The team led by Mithali Raj is expected to go all the way this time around.

Veteran names such as Shikha Pandey, Jemimah Rodrigues and Punam Raut were dropped from the World Cup squad, sparking controversy.
