From the archives: The shouts of three NHL referees

At the beginning of the 1998-99 season, the National Hockey League upgraded from a single referee system to a double zebra referee system. This is a very logical reason: four eyes for detecting violations are better than two eyes.

After all, the fastest game on earth has become so fast that an ice official can’t handle it accurately.

However, this is not the first time such a change has been considered. In fact, 71 years ago, the sports editor of the Canadian national newspaper urged the league tycoons to have referees equivalent to three games.
