“Friends forever”: Bailey remembers Maradona

Brazilian football superstar Pele paid tribute to his legendary compatriot Diego Maradona on Thursday on the first anniversary of the Argentine’s death at the age of 60.

“A year without Diego. Friends forever,” Bailey wrote on Instagram and posted a photo of the two of them hugging and grinning.

Pele and Maradona, who have never played against each other on the pitch, often compete for the title of the best football player in history.

But since Maradona’s death, the 81-year-old Pele has left behind their sometimes fierce competition and instead focuses on the warm friendship they also share.

“The world has lost a legend,” he wrote on the day Maradona died of a heart attack.

“One day, I hope, we will play football together in the sky.”

Pele and Maradona were jointly named the best players of the 20th century by FIFA in 2000-the Brazilian was selected by an expert jury, and the Argentine was voted by the fans.
