England’s Stephen Horton withdrew from World Cup qualifiers due to injury

The national team said on Friday that England women’s football captain Stephen Horton had withdrawn from the team due to an ankle injury before the World Cup qualifiers against North Macedonia and Luxembourg.

The 33-year-old Horton was injured in the team’s last training session and will return to the club for further evaluation. Arsenal’s Lia Williamson was appointed captain.

“First of all, we hope Stephen will recover as soon as possible, and hope that she can recover as soon as possible,” said head coach Salina Wigman.

“This is also the first exciting opportunity for Leah Williamson to wear the captain’s armband at the top, and I look forward to seeing her in action,” she added.

Later on Friday, England will play against Group D rivals North Macedonia, and on Tuesday they will play Luxembourg.
