New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel, who broke a record 10 wickets in an innings against India in the Mumbai Test last month, has been named the 2021 ICC Men’s Cricketer Player of the Month. Patel became the third bowler to achieve the feat after England’s Jim Lake and India’s Anil Kuble.
Ajaz scored 14 wickets in the Mumbai Test against India in early December, including all 10 in the first innings. He broke Sir Richard Hadley’s records for best bowling statistic by a New Zealand bowler in a Test match and best bowling statistic by a left-arm spinner in a Test match. Mumbai-born Ajaz made a fairytale return to his birth city on his first trip to India with the Test team.
“It was a very special occasion and it was cool for me, but especially so for my family. I have received a lot of support from them over the years, enabling me to do what I do and see The joy it brought them was very special. I think the boys bowled well and I think it was destined to happen the day I ended.
I think it has (sunk), but at the same time, you mentioned that it’s only done 3 times, but I think it’s also a lot of luck involved. “ Ajaz said at the end of the Test.
Without a doubt, Ajaz’s performance was a milestone that will be remembered for years: JP Duminy
Ajaz Patel has wrapped up the first day of the Mumbai Test with all four wickets named after him. He then made an immediate statement at his first meeting the next day, with wickets delivered back-to-back. Although he was denied a hat-trick, Ajaz went on to take all ten wickets in the innings and even drew applause from the opposition.
Mayank Agarwal, nominated for the award alongside Ajaz Patel, scored 150 runs for India, helping them to 325. Unfortunately, New Zealand were tied 62 times as Ravichandran Ashwin opted for 4/8. India then went 276/7d in the second set to set the Kiwi’s target at 540.
However, the Blackcaps only scored 167 points and lost the game by 372 points.
JP Duminy, December member of the ICC Voting Academy, welcomed this achievement. “What a historic achievement! Taking 10 wickets in one innings is a feat to celebrate. There is no doubt that Ajaz’s performance was a milestone that will be remembered for years to come.”
