2022 WNBA free agency: What will the Las Vegas Aces do with Liz Cambage?

The end of the 2021 season has been disappointing for the Aces. They didn’t live up to their championship aspirations or even make it to the WNBA Finals. The result was unacceptable for a team consisting of Liz Cambage, Kelsey Plum, Dearica Hamby and A’ja Wilson. So, Ace went out and made a change. Enter Becky Harmon. The Aces signed her as their next head coach, replacing Bill Laimbeer. It’s a shock and a message to everyone in the WNBA that the Aces are shaking things up and aren’t happy with last year’s results. With that in mind, what will happen to the roster? What changes are even possible?

The good news is that Aces has all the options available. They have enough money to run it and see if adding a new coach is enough to take an already great team and take it to the next level. However, this is unlikely to happen. A new coach usually means big changes, and with so many unrestricted free agents, who knows what the market for those players will be and whether some of them want to come back.

The two most influential players were Liz Cambage and A’ja Wilson. For me, one of the decisions was more challenging than the other. You have to bring A’ja back. She’s so young and so talented – it would be foolish to let her go. Cambage is a little hard. You have to ask her if she can fit in with the team, who knows if she wants to go to Las Vegas. It’s clear that she originally wanted to join the Los Angeles Sparks, but given the scrutiny and disappointing finish of the 2021 season, maybe she’s done with the Aces.

Another big factor in free agency this season is Becky Hammon. What kind of players does she want on this team? What type of system will she be running? How will this force roster changes? We’ll find out the answers to those answers as free agency kicks off, and we’ll see the Aces start making moves.

One thing’s for sure: Las Vegas is never boring. It’s risky to make this kind of coaching change on an already great team. However, it’s clear the Aces want a championship and feel they need to change coaches to get the job done. We’ll see how the Aces fared in free agency and whether they can overcome the odds and win their first WNBA title in 2022.
